Letter from Japanese coalition against GM wheat
November 5, 2003

Dear farmers and traders of USA and Canada,

We are a coalition of Japanese consumers' and organic farmers' organizations and individuals. We are strongly against GM wheat, which contains not only RoundUp Ready herbicide-resistant protein, but also antibiotics and the virus protein CaMV, all of which have the potential to harm human health and cause irreversible damage to the ecosystem.

We will neither buy nor eat even a single such grain; nor will we allow one grain to come into Japan.

Please stop planting GM wheat seeds and instead continue to use the traditional varieties that we have enjoyed for so long. If news that GM wheat is being commercially grown -- even being contemplated -- reaches us, we will launch a massive campaign to stop the consumption of wheat and return to rice as a complete substitute for wheat.

We sincerely hope that you will take our wishes into consideration when you choose which wheat to use: GM wheat or conventional wheat.

Sincerely,

Coalition of Farmers and Consumers against GM food -- Japan
